Autumn Updates

Where are we, then?

Hi everyone, and welcome to this quarter’s newsletter. I’ve had a lovely end of the summer and slide into Autumn. All sorts of fun writing things have happened, so here’s an update from me!

What have I been doing?

I really enjoyed Glasgow WorldCon, which was just an absolutely whirlwind of publisher parties, panels, book stuff, more parties, and general schmoozing. Those who missed me will be pleased to know I will be attending Seattle WorldCon in 2025!

I also had a cracking time, as I always do, at Bloody Scotland, moderating a great panel on Missing Persons, as well as seeing my good friend Dave Goodman reading from his recently released A Reluctant Spy, which if you haven’t read, you should.

Just recently, I went to Spain for HispaCon, which is the nation’s SFF conference, because the Spanish translation for Ascension was a finalist in the 2024 Ignotus Awards (kind of like the Spanish version of the Hugos). I signed some books, did some panelling, and had a great time at the awards ceremony, even if I didn’t win (shakes fist at Stephen Graham Jones).

What news is there?

The big news, which you may have seen if you’re on my socials, is that Dissolution (which is coming out in March) has been bought by Sony Pictures for a major feature film. It’ll be adapted by the amazing multi-award-winning Eric Heisserer, who wrote such scripts as Arrival and Birdbox, and produced by the the giant Temple Hill Productions. You can see the announcement on Deadline here.

We’ve actually just tied up contracts recently, so we’ll be moving into the early stages of pre-production and getting the script written for that very soon. I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with Eric, who is just a creative powerhouse, and with the force of both Temple Hill and Sony behind us, I’ve got high hopes for this one.

In the last newsletter, I also shared the US cover of Dissolution. I’m thrilled to be able to share the UK one here, too, which I absolutely love.

There’s a great alternative cover for the proofs as well that I can’t share yet, but if you keep an eye on my socials, you’ll see it.

The other great Dissolution news at this stage is that the wonderful Broken Binding have confirmed they’re doing another sprayed edge special edition of the UK edition when it comes out. They did the gorgeous special edition of Ascension and I’m thrilled to be working with them again, especially with the gorgeous cover above.

Dissolution will be out March 25 (US) / March 27 (UK) and is available for preorder now across all major retailers.

The other work to come out this year is Extremity, which is my novella with Tordotcom. That will be out 12th September 2025 worldwide, and I’ll be sharing more details on that as we get closer to the time.

What’s coming up?

After Extremity, you can expect to see either Abyss (working title), another novella with Tordotcom, and Exhumation, another speculative novel with Voyager/Riverhead. Which will come out first, I don’t know, but neither will be before 2026, that’s for sure.

Right now, I’m working on another speculative novel tentatively titled Illumination, but there’s plenty more in the pipeline, from forays into crime fiction, more novellas, and other ideas. Watch this space!

As a note on socials, after the disastrous political results last week, I’ve made a conscious decision to fully step away from the hellscape website that helped make it happen. My profile is on X/Twitter as a placeholder, but I will no longer be posting, reading, or reposting anything on that platform. If you want to find me, I’m on both Bluesky and Instagram (though more regularly on Bluesky!).

See you in around February / March time for more updates from the newsletter! Stay well everyone.
